What is Karma? The word in Sanskrit , is "ACTION." I believe it is another word for energy. It is created by our thoughts, words, and actions. I once read the following:
Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.
The source is unknown

In the book "Path to Bliss" written by the Dali Lama it is said:
"Some people misunderstand the concept of karma. They take the Buddha's doctrine of the law of causality to mean that all is predetermined, that there is nothing that the individual can do. This is a total misunderstanding. The very term karma or action is a term of active force, which indicates that future events are within your own hands. Since action is a phenomenon that is committed by a person, a living being, it is within your own hands whether or not you engage in action."
The concept of Karma is not just supported by Buddhism and Hinduism. It is supported by most forms of Christianity. See the following verses from the Testaments:
(Gal. 6:7)"
"All things whatsoever you would that men should do to you,
do even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
(Matthew 7:12)"
Peggie Jentoft writes: Karma means cause and effect. We talk about good and bad Karma but Karma is basically neutral. The "law of karma" is sort of like the energy and spiritual equivalent of Newton's third law. Every action has an equal an opposite reaction. The lessons or effects are not Divinely appointed. Karma is more of a mechanical process than a willed process from the divine perspective. Many effects of one own actions are self chosen and directed from an individual perspective.
When something bad happens to us, does that mean we have done something wrong? My answer is: ~~ absolutely NO! I experienced a horrific automobile accident in 2008 and what happened to me (Expect for a miracle that I am still walking the planet) a light bulb turned on inside me and I See better what my purpose in life is. I am so much a better human. That is the beauty of this life, " bad events" may be a wake-up call for us and not a result of "bad Karma".
